CHAPTER 16
Lura didn't look up until Ben turned down the wrong road. She saw a dirt lane that led to only one farmhouse. "Are we making a stop?" she asked.
"Boyer Burke found a dead doe on her place this morning. I want to look at it. This won't take long."
"Are you on duty?"
"No. I'll only be a minute, all right? I have to check something."
Lura nodded and sat quietly as he parked the Jeep in Boyer's drive and tapped on the horn. Boyer came to the door and smiled when she saw Ben. One dark brow lifted when she saw Lura, but soon the smile expanded to include her as well. Boyer stepped onto her porch and walked down the steps to meet Ben as he left the Jeep. She wore a towel around her shoulders. Boyer shook her wet, dark curls and nodded to Lura in the Jeep before she spoke to Ben. "Good thing I started wearing orange every time I walk. It couldâve been me that got shot. The doe's up on the bluff, about fifty yards south of the big walnut tree with the orange band around the trunk. Give me a holler if you can't find her, and I'll come out and show you. Iâm getting trail cams as soon as I can, find out who keeps trespassing and poaching on my land. Iâm just letting you know." She turned to Lura then. "You're welcome to come wait in the house while he's looking."
Lura opened her mouth to accept the friendly offer, but Ben asked her to remain in the Jeep.
"I won't be that long," he said.
Boyer smiled and shrugged before returning inside the house. Ben went off in search of the doe, and Lura sat and attempted to pull her thoughts together. The plan to rebuild her life did not include reliving any part of the past, but what Bryce said brought all her demons rushing back, the memories that accompanied his words so vivid it felt like a physical assault. Lura wanted to forget everything that happened that night, never think about it again, but Bryceâs hurtful words made her realize this was how everyone in Dumford felt about her. Even her old friends. No one would let her forget.
She blinked as she saw Ben reappear. Gone less than five minutes, he held up his index finger to her then he went to knock on Boyer Burke's door. They spoke for a moment then Ben returned to the Jeep.
"What was it?" Lura asked as he climbed inside.
"Boyerâs right. Someone killed the doe and ran off before dressing her. A clean shot through the head."
"It wasn't what you were looking for," Lura said.
Ben looked at her. "How do you know what I'm looking for?"
"I don't. Bryce mentioned something about dead animals in a vacant house. I thought they might be related."
"Me too," Ben said. He backed the Jeep out of the drive and drove down the dirt lane. A half mile from the highway, he pulled the Jeep to the side of the road and turned off the engine.
